Where Did the Season Go? Taking Stock While It’s Still Fresh, e-tips, September 2003

Many of our readers in the northern hemisphere are rapidly approaching the ends of the their competitive seasons. Now is the time to reflect back on your season. Consider the following questions as you do so:

  •  Where do you stand relative to your goals (this season and longer-term)?
  • To what do you attribute your successes?
  • What kept you from realizing those goals that remain unfulfilled?
  • What would you do differently if you had it to do over again?
  • Assuming next year’s racing calendar is similar to this year’s, which would you designate your A races?
  • Given your earliest likely A-race, when do you anticipate beginning your 2004 Annual Training Plan (ATP)?
  • Given all of the above, when should you plan your transition period?
  • Given the likely timing of your end of season Transition period (a planned period of rest and recovery; see my October 2002 e-tip titled The Transition Phase: Rejuvenate Now; Go Faster When It Matters), what can you do to maximize the likelihood of achieving any remaining goals?
  • Can you do anything to help a teammate achieve his or her goals?

I suggest you revisit the first five questions during your Transition period as you formalize your 2004 ATP and corresponding goals.
